On April 16, 2021, the United States Senate overwhelmingly confirmed Martin O’Malley as the head of the Social Security Administration (SSA), 97-2. He will replace acting head, Nancy Altman. O’Malley served as the governor of Maryland from 2007 to 2015.
Prior to his confirmation, O’Malley served as the national chairperson of the Irish American Democrats, a non-partisan organization that promotes Irish-American political engagement. He also worked as a banker for Financial Strategies Group from 2005 to 2007 and as the deputy secretary of Maryland’s Department of Labor from 2002 to 2005.
As head of the SSA, O’Malley will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the agency and overseeing the crucial government program that provides social security benefits to millions of Americans. O’Malley has also pledged to reverse the Trump administration’s policies, resignations, and budget cuts that affected the agency.
