House Democratic leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) has floated an end-run around his Republican counterpart, Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, in order to avoid a government shutdown. This would allow Democrats to pass the spending package without McCarthy’s support, and avoid a government shutdown. However, McCarthy has said he will only agree to a spending deal if Congress passes government funding bills separately that are “Catholic in consultation.” It remains to be seen if this potential end-run will be effective in avoiding a government shutdown.
